We found ourselves in the ER on friday! Tim was out of town, K was in school and i decided to have Conner checked out. The night before when K had her friend over, he was outside playing on our play structure and was being spiderman scaling down without a wall and pushed back to jump and fell. I found him on all fours in a mess of tears and snot trying to get back to the house. It was so sad. I felt so bad. He couldn't walk/ wouldn't walk. The bare weight he would scream in pain. I thought maybe he broke his tailbone or just a bad bruise. Nothing we could really do about it so I gave him some motrin and put him to bed. (don't worry i made sure he could feel everything and move everything so i wasn't too worried). I figured if he woke up and wasn't any better i would take him in while K was at school. So that is what I did. He wasn't in any pain if he wasn't on his bum or trying to walk. He loved watching TV all day. I know the ER nurse and doc didn't think much of it. They wondered "what kind of mom would wait all night before bringing their kid in" - they told me they were thinking that until they found out I was a nurse. I usually don't tell them that I'm a nurse because I don't want them to treat me differently but Conner tells people and he did.
He had to go on his bum for xrays and I could totally tell he was in so much pain on that hard table but he really was a very brave kid. We really weren't taken seriously until the xrays came back and they rushed us into a room closer to the nurses with all the bells and whistles. Conner had one of his vertebrae in his sacrum ( above the tailbone) displaced. So I like to say he had a broken bum. He laughs at that. We were going to be taken by ambulance into Boston to go to Childrens but after talking with the pediatric neurosurgeon and pediatric othropedic surgeon there, we decided to stay overnight at this hospital. I didn't have my google to figure things out on my own (i don't have internet on my phone---bummer). There was no surgical intervention that could be done. Pain control and making sure he had a BM was our goal while being there.
Conner wasn't happy about the IV. He did love that remote control and he loved when we got to our room and he could play with the bed controls. When we were admitted, the admitting nurse asked what he would like for dinner (she said he could order anything he wanted). His request was for steak of course. The nurse laughed. He ended up getting a hamburger.
Kaitlyn was very concerned for him! She wouldn't stop giving him "gentle" hugs.
He wasn't happy about trying to walk. At first, he was screaming even to stand. God is good!
He was so happy he made it around the unit and it didn't hurt bad today. So our goal was getting some poop out of it. It is going to hurt bad for awhile when he needs to poop so we have to make sure he is doing it. Ready for too much info? Conner is an awesome pooper usually. He eats so much fruit and veggies he never has a problem with this. Conner and I struggled all morning of me picking him up and putting him on the pot. When Tim got there this am, he was able to coach him through this ordeal and then we had our walking papers to get out of there.
We couldn't leave without taking a picture of his little hospital gown. We are home now and as we speak he wants to go play outside and climb. Oh boy. They said just to make sure no sports for three weeks and then follow up with xrays. We are blessed! He could have hit any part of his spine and it ended up being his bum.
Just for future reference. The docs were continually asking me to repeat the story of what happened. The were constantly asking me how many times we have been to the ER and how many broken bones Conner has had. They were definitely checking me out to see if I was an abusive parent and I caused this. The orthopedic that saw me was kinda rude and when he left he said maybe you should put some wood chips down so this doesn't happen again. I responded and told him we have hundreds of dollars worth of wood chips out there and it still happened. I was not pleased with that doc. But other than him we received very good care! :0: Just so thankful!
